Skincare with Friends Ep 85- Best Skincare Products 2023

For the first episode of 2023 I thought it would be fun to look at the best skincare products on the internet.

There’s a useful website called looria.com where you can analyse internet sites to find out the most mentioned products, which are most likely to be the most recommended. Looria analyses posts, comments and reviews from consumers on sites that it deems “trusted”. Trusted reviews have these qualities-

1. Long-term product testing and analysis

2. Honest recommendations over commercial interest

Looria analysed several sources to find the most popular skincare products Specifically Skincare Addiction. Skincare Addiction is a group of 1.5 million members and it’s a place to discuss skincare issues and products, it’s a very handy place and the wiki guide is a very handy place to start if you’re looking for specific advice.

Funnily enough during my research I found a study on skincare addiction- by Lee et al, published last year-

Reddit, a popular social media website, has numerous forums where users may discuss health care related topics and request diagnostic advice for dermatologic conditions. In 2020, Reddit had accumulated 42 million daily active users, 303.4 million posts, 2 billion comments, and 49.2 billion ‘upvotes’ e an action that increases the visibility of the posts to other reddit users. Our study was conducted to analyze the top responses of 300 user-submitted requests for dermatologic advice on 2 popular reddit forums (150 posts each from SkinCareAddiction and DermatologyQuestions). Posts were only included if a photograph was also submitted. Three board-certified dermatologists reviewed each post, providing a diagnosis, followed by grading the post’s top user-submitted comment for specific criteria including accuracy, appropriateness, and whether the comments were misleading or potentially dangerous. Grading was performed using a 5-point scale where 5 correlated to the highest level of accuracy and appropriateness. Mean scores for the top comment’s accuracy and appropriateness were 3.28 (95% CI 3.12- 3.45) and 3.3 (95% CI 3.14-3.45), respectively. On a 5-point scale where 5 correlated with a comment that was highly misleading/potentially dangerous, the average reddit comment grade was 2.33 (95% CI 2.18-2.48). Social media sites, such as Reddit, may be beneficial to patients requesting dermatologic advice. However, responses should be taken with caution as the information provided may be inaccurate or insufficient for treatment recommendations. Dermatologists should be aware of these freely available online resources which patients use to seek dermatologic diagnoses and treatment advice.

It essentially says that Dermatologists on average only rated the top answer to Reddit questions on skincare as around 3 out of 5 for accuracy. My point being that if you have a skin complaint, the best place to go for advice is a dermatologist and the most effective skincare products are those that you get on prescription. 

That being said, aside from prescription skincare, for the rest of our routine it’s good to get consumer reviews.

It’s a great list, aside from the Thayer’s Witchhazel toner I would happily stick all of these in my basket. The whole list comes to £326.08, that’s £84 less than 100mls of Creme de la Mer. Interestingly there are several vitamin C products near the top of the list, considering it’s controversy that’s quite surprising. We have done a series of vitamin C and the best products on the market according to science, definitely have a read before you take the plunge on a Vitamin C product.

I love that generally nothing on these lists are expensive. Lots of these I’ve tried personally and like. I love that Euroskincare has so many sunscreens at the top of their list. There are lots of great skincare staples here that would be a good addition to anyone’s cabinet.
